Rate of Growth: Fast.

 

Growing Conditions: Adapts to many soils. Moderately shade tolerant. Short-lived. Easily transplanted.

 

Uses: Profuse crops of showy white flowers and orange fruits (readily eaten by birds). One of the most beautiful flowering trees of the northern forest.
 

Height at maturity: 15’-25’ tall.

River Birch

Rate of Growth: Fast.

Dark cinnamon to light creamy brown bark (peels in shaggy chunks).

 

Uses: Excellent tree for low, swampy areas – can even tolerate standing water for several weeks at a time.

 

RESISTANT TO BIRCH BORER.

Black Cherry

Rate of Growth: Fast, moderately long lived.

 

Growing Conditions: Shade tolerant in youth then becoming shade intolerant. Does not tolerate high water tables or poorly drained sites. Resistant to frost. Produces white flowers and black and dark purple flesh fruit 0.5” diameter.

 

Uses: Satiny reddish-brown wood prized for fine furniture. BEWARE – leaves and twigs contain hydrocyanic acid, POISONOUS to browsing livestock; AND seeds are poisonous to humans.

Red Maple

Rate of Growth: Fast.

Growing Conditions: Will grow on a wide range of soil types. Shade tolerant. Moderately long lived.

Uses: Preferred deer food and subject to deer damage if deer populations are high. Sprouts vigorously after injury by fire, cutting or browsing. Not to be confused with Crimson Red Maple.

Sugar Maple

Rate of Growth: Slow.

Growing Conditions: Moist, well to somewhat poorly drained, fertile soils of nearly all textures. Highly shade tolerant; long lived.

Uses: Furniture, flooring, cabinet work, veneer, ply-wood, also principal source of maple sugar.

Silver Maple

Rate of Growth: Fast.

Growing Conditions: Adapts to a variety of soils, including clay, characteristically found in flood plains of large rivers and moist bottomland sites of small rivers and creeks. Moderately long lived. Shade-intolerant.

Uses: Furniture, veneer, pulpwood, woodenware, boxes, and crates.

Height at maturity: 50’-70’ tall.

Red Oak

Rate of Growth: Relatively fast.

Growing Conditions: Prefers dry uplands and can be found on most cool, well-drained sites. Relatively long lived.

Uses: Acorns eaten by turkey, blue jay, ruffed grouse and wood duck. Long tap root is prominent in young trees. Relatively free of insect and disease pests.

White Oak

Rate of Growth: Relatively slow.

Growing Conditions: Long lived. Intermediate in shade tolerance. Characteristic of oak-hickory forests on dry-mesic upland sites, with drought prone, well drained sandy loam to clay loam soils; and not easily transplanted due to long tap root.

Uses: lumber and shade.

Height at maturity: 60’-120’ tall

Ginkgo

Rate of Growth: Slow.

Growing Conditions: Well drained soils. Oldest tree known to man, unique fan- shaped leaves with excellent yellow fall color. Very resistant to pest and pollution.

Hybrid Poplar

Rate of Growth: Very fast.

Growing Conditions: Adapts to most soils (however, they do poorly on soils with clay hardpan near the surface or in sand dunes); not as spreading as cottonwoods; disease resistant; male hybrids (no cotton is formed, and no seeds) short lived (15-20 years).

Uses: Crossbred specifically for fast growth in windbreaks.
