Roselow Crabapple

Rate of Growth: Very fast.

Growing Conditions: Adapts to most all soil types; best in full sun and well drained soil.

Uses: Attractive white flowers and bright red fruit. Fruit enjoyed by wildlife and sometimes gathered for making preserves and jellies.

Highbush Cranberry

Rate of Growth: Fast.

Growing Conditions: Locally frequent throughout the state along streams, in open or lightly shaded swamps and wet grounds; moderately shade tolerant.

Uses: Produces handsome clusters of white flowers and scarlet fruits, which birds eat in late winter; berries can be picked to make home-made jellies; excellent wildlife plant.

Height at maturity: 6-15’ tall and can spread up to 12 ‘.

Red-Osier Dogwood

Rate of Growth: Medium.

Growing Conditions: Does well in moderately wet soils; shade intolerant; degree of stem redness directly related to amount of exposure to sunlight (greenish stems in shade). Easily transplanted and propagated.

Uses: Fruit is bunched or clustered red or white fruit: eaten by songbirds, pheasant, grouse, deer and squirrel.

Height at maturity: Grows 7-10’ tall and can spread up to 12’.

Elderberry

Rate of Growth: Slow growing if shaded; fast growing in full sunlight.

Growing Conditions: Prefers rich, moist lowland; shade tolerant; transplants well.

Uses: Fruits excellent for wildlife. Deep purple berry-like fruit in large clusters with white flowers (June-July) native wetland edge species. Easily transplanted and propagated by stem cuttings. Planted along stream banks, the drooping branches provide high quality aquatic cover.

Height at maturity: Grows up to about 8’ tall and can spread up to 15’ across.

Lilac

Rate of Growth: Relatively fast growing.

Growing Conditions: Full sunlight; moist to dry soils.

Uses: Good density provides cover for many birds and mammals; blooms in May with showy and fragrant white to various shades of purple (lilac) flowers.

Height at maturity: Tall upright shrub that can grow up to 20’ tall and 15’ wide.

Rose of Sharon

Rate of Growth: Vigorous upright habit but seldom leafy to ground. Growing

Conditions: Sunny locations. Foliage late to appear; flowers in late summer, lavender purple, pink, or white; up to 5 inches across. Can self-sow to the point of nuisance.

Uses: Good for borders and hedgerows. Deer Resistant.

Height at maturity: 8-12 feet.

Service Berry (Alleghany)

Rate of Growth: Moderate.

Growing Conditions: Full sun, well-drained, moist to dry soils. Easy to grow. Bears sweet black fruit and is characterized by a bronzy color of its unfolding leaves. Leaves turn orange-red in fall.

Butterfly Bush

Rate of Growth: Fast.

Growing Conditions: Full sun. Well-drained, moist fertile soil. Easy to grow. Called summer lilac due to its similar fragrant flowers that bloom all summer.

Height at maturity: 10-15’ if not cut back. This plant dies back to the ground but comes back in spring. Can cut back dead branches in late fall.

Black-Eyed Susan

1 oz. packet will cover 15-25 sq. ft. This wildflower blooms all summer and fall. In the wild, Black-eyed Susan grows in both moist and dry prairies and old fields. Its conspicuous 2-3” daisy-like flowers with golden yellow to yellow-orange petals and its long bloom season have made this a favorite. The flower center is a deep-brown to purple-brown dome that if left standing, remains ornamental throughout the winter. This plant is a popular food source for butterflies. It can provide a spectacular show of color in large masses and is good for both edging and as tall backdrop in the perennial border.
